University of Glasgow History

Founded in 1451, the University of Glasgow is the fourth oldest university in the English-speaking world. Since then it has nurtured the talents of seven Nobel laureates and two Prime Ministers – Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman and Andrew Bonar Law.

In 1933, the university welcomed Albert Einstein to give a lecture on the origins of the general theory of relativity. While the father of economics Adam Smith, Scotland’s architect of devolution Donald Dewar and renowned physicist and engineer Lord Kelvin are all former students.
